Alternatives to Compressing
Split the PDF: If the file contains separate sections that do not all need to go to the same recipient, send them in separate emails.Cloud sharing link: Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox all offer shareable links. Upload the full-quality PDF and send the link instead of the attachment.
WeTransfer: For one-off large file sends, WeTransfer allows up to 2 GB per transfer on the free tier. The recipient gets a download link valid for 7 days.
WhatsApp Document: Files up to 100 MB sent as a Document (not a media file) are transmitted without re-compression.
Maintaining Quality for Professional Documents
- For text-only PDFs: any compression method works
- For documents with data visualizations and charts: browser method is fine — vector charts remain crisp
- For documents with photography: target q=75-80 for embedded image re-encoding
- For print-quality documents: send via cloud link rather than compressing
